About SierraRios SierraRios is divided into two legal entities: (1) SierraRios Nonprofit, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable corporation with main purpose to identify, provide information about, raise awareness of, and support activities that will protect precious rivers from damming and human-caused degradation. As a nonprofit charitable corporation, all revenue donated to SierraRios Nonprofit must be used to further the educational, scientific, literary, and charitable goals of the organization, as set forth in the Articles of Incorporation. It also means that all donations are fully tax-deductible. Eventually we hope that SierraRios will grow to become a major organization helping to protect global rivers. The Name: "SierraRios" literally translates to "Mountain Rivers", and is derived from Spanish terms for the rivers that flow through the major mountains in Mexico and Latin America. In much of Latin America, mountain ranges are called "Sierras". For example, in Mexico there is the Sierra Madre Occidental (i.e. "Western Mother Sierra"), Sierra Madre Oriental (i.e. "Eastern"), Sierra Madre del Sur ("Southern"), and various other names farther sourth. There are also subparts of the Sierra with different nomenclature, such as the Sierra Tarahumara in the Copper Canyon region, and the Sierra Cachuma near Puerto Vallarta. [Note that there is also a "Sierra Nevada" ("snowy") mountain range in California and Nevada - an appellation originating when the territory was a part of Nueva España and then México. |
